Thousands of drains.
One specification.
The whole campus.

A university campus means dozens of buildings — laboratories, dining halls, halls of residence and sports facilities. The estates team cannot hand-check every trap over each summer shutdown. Green Drain™ covers the whole network through one standardised procurement.

Problem & solution

The particular challenge on large campuses.

Universities in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek, Zadar, and other cities. Each building has its own technical service, its own solutions, its own local practices. Standardisation is difficult.

Without Green Drain™

  • Halls of residence run near-empty over the summer, and the traps in the empty rooms dry out.
  • Laboratories with chemical drains have specific resistance requirements.
  • Menze (Student Centre) has a classic HoReCa problem with flies and odours.
  • Campus sports centres — large-sized shower stalls
  • The technical service is requesting documented control measures for auditing and public procurement.

With Green Drain™

  • Compatible with the EN 1253 standard — covers most European traps
  • Resistant to laboratory chemicals (dilute HCl, dilute H₂SO₄, organic solvents in brief contact)
  • Consistent specification across the entire portfolio — easier maintenance
  • Solution for student housing via summer standby (as with schools)
  • ASSE 1072-2020 public procurement documentation
Croatian higher education

System with 138 thousand students.

According to the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, 147,454 students were enrolled in higher education in the winter semester of the 2024/2025 academic year, 14.9 % of them at polytechnics and colleges and the remainder at universities. Each campus has dozens of facilities with seasonal summer operations — from canteens and dormitories to laboratories.

Data Sources and Regulatory Framework (2024–2025 data)

Statistical data were taken from official sources: State Statistical Office (data.dzs.hr) Croatian Institute of Public Health (hzjz.hr), Ministry of Labor, Pension System, Family and Social Policy (mrosp.gov.hr), Agency for Science and Higher Education (azvo.hr), Ministry of Tourism and Sports (mint.gov.hr). Regulatory framework: EUR-Lex for EU directives and regulations — Regulation (EU) 2017/745 (MDR), Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 (general principles of food law), Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 (food hygiene — HACCP obligation), Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 (food contact materials), Regulation (EU) No 528/2012 (BPR), Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX). Standards: EN 1253-1 (floor P-traps, water seal ≥50 mm), EN 1253 Parts 6/7/8 (gullies with a water seal below 50 mm, with mechanical closure, and combined types; 2023 editions), ASSE 1072-2020 (floor drain trap seal protection devices) and NSF/ANSI 2 (food equipment). HACCP International RG-04 is a private certification programme operated by HACCP International, not an official certification issued by a public authority. Tourism data taken from the DZS publication for H1 2025, healthcare data from the HZJZ report 2024, data for education from DZS publications for the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 school years, data for nursing homes from the MROSP report, and announcements of EU-funded construction in 2025. Revision date: May 2026.

Implementation

Phase by phase across the estate.

Campus estates teams adopt the specification, and it is rolled out over three to five summers, priority buildings first.

01

Master plan

The campus maps all buildings and estimates the number of drains by building type.

02

Pilot

One building (e.g. a dormitory) — pilot installation, one-season evaluation.

03

Tender

Central procurement — ASSE 1072 specification, delivery within 3 years.

04

Roll-out

The technical service is installing them in each building during the summer work.

Model Recommendation

Recommended sizes by campus building.

Croatian university campuses consist of faculties (new and old buildings), student dormitories, canteens, and sports facilities. Standardisation across the campus portfolio means a mix of all sizes — but GD 2 dominates because most sanitary fittings are 50–58 mm.

Green Drain™ Recommended for your industry.

  • Dormitories (rooms, bathrooms)GD 2The standard for all homes for the past 20 years.
  • Menze (Student Centre)GD 3 or GD 4HoReCa standard for meal preparation.
