Croatian plumbers deal with complaints about drain odour every day. The typical diagnostic routine: check the trap, replace a gasket if needed, tell the customer to run water regularly. A solution that genuinely lasts is rarely on offer — it is either too expensive, too complicated, or both.
The classic trap fault
A professional called out to a 'smell in the bathroom' has three standard scenarios:
- A dry trap — the room has stood empty and the water has evaporated. Solved by running water for 30 seconds.
- A damaged gasket — the rubber seal between the pipe and the drain has failed. Strip the trap, replace the gasket, refit it. 30–45 minutes.
- A venting fault — the system 'pulls' the trap because of inadequate vent pipework. The hardest one to solve.
The first is the most common — and the most frustrating, because it keeps coming back. The customer pays for the call-out and the problem returns in two or three weeks.
How to tell the three scenarios apart in five minutes
On-site diagnosis comes down to a few checks before the trap is opened at all:
- Fill it and wait. Pour half a litre of water into the drain and ask the customer to report whether the smell returns. If it comes back after a week or two with the room unused, this is evaporation, not a fault.
- Listen to the neighbouring fixture. If the smell hits after a WC is flushed or a bath drained on the same stack, the system is pulling the trap — the problem is the venting, not the seal.
- Check the joint. Moisture, salt deposits or drip marks around the pipe joint mean a failed gasket. In that case the smell is there even with a full trap.
- Ask which rooms have been standing empty. Wood stores, laundries, basements, air-conditioning condensate drains and unused washrooms are the most common source, and the customer rarely mentions them.
If the diagnosis lands on the first scenario, running water settles the call-out but not the problem. That is why the same drain comes back a second time.
What GD does differently

No work on the existing pipework
For the plumber and the contractor this is the operational headline. Most odour solutions require an intervention: a trap primer needs a water connection and a valve, dosing systems need power and servicing, mechanical seals are fitted by cutting into the pipe. Every such intervention means agreeing access with the client, taking the room out of use, and one more item at handover.
A passive seal adds nothing to the installation. It sits inside the existing pipe diameter as a removable insert, so it is recorded as a maintenance consumable rather than a modification to the building services. On refurbishment work that is the difference between one line on a list and a separate subcontract package. On a larger property — a 200-room hotel with 600 floor drains — one technician covers the whole building in two and a half working days.
What customers ask their plumber
The most common questions, and the quick answers professionals can give:
- "Will it restrict the water at high flow?" No — the seal opens downwards under the weight of the water, and its throughput is greater than that of any domestic source.
- "How is it cleaned?" A damp cloth during routine floor cleaning. A visual inspection once a year (5 minutes)."Does the rubber need replacing?" No. Silicone does not degrade in standard use; service life around 5 years.
- "Is it resistant to chlorine in the drains?" Yes. Medical-grade silicone is certified for hospital conditions (5% chlorine, quaternary amines, peracetic acids).
How long the silicone actually lasts
Plumbers most often ask the same question: how long does the rubber survive in service before it hardens or gives up. The test data for medical-grade silicone built to the ASSE 1072-2020 specification:
- ASSE 1072 life cycle test: 2,500 opening cycles under IAPMO 1554-25004 conditions, with no degradation
- Thermal cycling: more than 1,500 cycles between 93 °C and 15 °C with no measurable change in hardness
- Chemical exposure: resistant to H₂SO₄ and NaOH, 500 h UV, 100 h ozone
- Field data: units returned after seven years of service in US hospitals with no visible degradation
The conservative figure for specification and maintenance planning stays at five years. It is also the answer a plumber can give a client without hedging — no servicing, no gasket replacement, just a visual check once a year.

- Measure correctly the first time. The internal diameter of the pipe below the grate is measured on site with a measuring tool, not estimated from drawings.
- Install into a dry trap where possible. It is easier to confirm that the seal has seated.
- Leave 3–5% of the quantity on site as spares. It speeds up any later replacement or addition.
- Record the size and location of every unit fitted. It saves time on any future diagnosis.
- Add the drains to the annual walk-round. A visual check only, with no servicing and nothing to dismantle.
To the client deciding on the specification, plumbers generally say the same thing: the product works, the installation really is simple, and the maintenance burden across five years is lower than with any solution that depends on water, electronics or staff discipline.
